The historic Italian capital city is set to elect first female mayor in their upcoming municipal elections.
The Five Star movement’s mayoral bet Virginia Riaggi is seen the favorite of the electorate against its rival Robert Giachetti of Democratic Party (PD).
Riaggi, a 37 year old lawyer, wins the first round of elections with garnering a 35% votes against the 24% of Giachetti.
The rising start of the Five Star movement was a shocked news for the Party of incumbent Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi who sees a tough fight in other cities like Bologna, Tulin and coutnry’s financial capital Milan.
Local political analyst believe that the anti-globalist wins over Rome will draw an impression for the party in 2018 Parliamentary elections.
The city was no mayor since October last year where PD’s Ignazio Marino resignation amid expenses scandal.
Meanwhile, the next city mayor will be facing its growing debt amounting to 13 billion euros doubled the city annual budget.
