A man was injured in Auburn after crashing while playing the mobile game Pokemon Go.
Pokemon Go is a mobile game that allows smartphone users to fight digital monsters in real life as they explore surroundings in search for virtual Pokemon creatures, that the man had crashed onto a tree while driving.
The Auburn police responded to an accident around 10:45 p.m. finding the vehicle had gone off the road and struck a tree. The driver admitted playing the Pokemon Go game while driving which caused him to be distracted.
Police said that the driver suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Auburn Police Chief Shawn Butler, in a statement reminded players to use common sense when playing the game and insist that personal safety should be remembered above everything else.
Butler also suggests not using the application when operating a motor vehicle or bicycle, do not trespass on private property when trying to catch Pokemon Go creatures, be aware of surroundings when walking and don’t stare down on phones not knowing hazards around like n roadways, drop-offs or waterways, use caution when sharing location as strangers can see your location information and travel in groups in public or well lit locations.
“Luckily the driver was not seriously injured but this is an example of how easily accidents can occur when someone is engaged in the game and not paying attention.” Butler said.
