After the inauguration of Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, reassured support amid rising rift between the leader and the Catholic Church.
Archbishop Villegas said the Church will support the new administration but will keep a watchful eye during the Duterte’s term.
The CBCP president also expressed hope that the 16th president of the republic, would not see the Church as an enemy on instances when the government and the latter could not agree on certain issues.
It can be remembered that during the president campaign and even the post-elections, Duterte strongly critizes the clergy and even said he will expose the alleged secrets and sins of the Catholic Church.
Archbishop Villegas insisted to remain silent amid Duterte’s attacks against the Church.
He said, “There is virtue in silence. There is virtue in speech. Wisdom is knowing when it is time for silence and when is the timing for speech.”
The president announced a date, June 29, when he would divulged Church secrets, day before his office assumption, no such revelation was made.
