Due to its gigantic fame, the South Korean drama “Descendants of the Sun” which stars Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo, has won the grand prize in the recent Paeksang Arts Awards 2016. Paeksang Arts Awards also known as Baeksang Arts Awards honors the outstanding achievement in South Korean Entertainment Industry in Film, Television, and Theater.
Descendants of the Sun’ story narrates of doctors stationed in a fictional war zone of Urk and follows a love story that develops between a surgeon (Kang Mo-yeon) played by Song Hye-Kyo & a special forces officer (Yoo Shi-jin) played by Song Joong-Ki. The two characters are both top-notch in their respective fields. The story will track their personal and professional struggles while exploring issues about the value of life & love.
The pair has developed superb chemistry on the eager fans across South Korea and countries in Asia to the extent of coining the term ‘Song-Song’ and ‘KiKyo’ for the power couple. Song Joong-Ki also became the face of Korean tourism by Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to be the honorary ambassador and promotional model for the country.
The Korean drama started airing February 24, 2016 and finished on April 22, with 16 forceful episodes garnered high ratings nationwide; the Neilsen Korea – 38.8%, and Seoul Peak rating – 46.6%. The lead actor Song Joong-Ki got the Most Popular Male Television award, while his counterpart lead actress Song Hye-Kyo, awarded as the Most Popular Female in Television.
