An American activist rescued 1,000 dogs that are scheduled to be slaughtered amid the annual celebration of Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China.
Marc Ching, founder of Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, convinced six owners of slaughterhouses to sell their businesses to him prior to this year’s festival.
After thecwners convinced, Ching and is team shut down the said slaughterhouses and rescued all the dogs that are scheduled to be slaughtered and sold.
According to the report, the activist visited 11 slaughterhouses during his rescue effort, and was unable to convince some owners. Ching mentioned that the money he paid is les than the revenue if all the dgs are sold; however, the owners also get to save production costs and labor as well.
Ching told InsideEdition.com, “Every year, everybody protest but it does nothing. I attack their supply chains. I go in and I shut these slaughterhouses down.”
He also shared their struggles in rescuing the dogs. Ching and his volunteers followed by police officers and sometimes impeded their efforts, even though the government claims to have no ties with the festival.
According to Peter J. LI of Humane Society International, Ching not only save dogs from a brutal fate, they also saved many humans from the risks of disease because many of the dogs at Yulin are sick, dying and already dead.
Li also pointed out that many of the dogs rescued might not survive, out of 1,400 rescued dogs last year that are brought to a shelter, 1,000 were dead in just two months.
The annual Yulin Festival in China has received various petition stopping the celebration of killing of dogs as part of their culture.
With a recent survey, 64% of Chinese people opposed the annual festival along with the strong opposition of International celebrities like Paris Hilton,Alicia Witt, Matt Damon and Pamela Anderson, who also voiced their support for Ching’s crusade.
