Drone startup Flirtey just recently partnered with convenience store chain 7-Eleven to debut its first commercial delivery to a private residence in Reno, Nevada.
The delivery made on July 11th with an autonomous drone that flew a mile from 7-Eleven location to a private home in Reno. According to the convenience store chain 7-Eleven, its initial delivery includes a chicken sandwich, donuts, coffee, candy and Slurpees. The goodies were packed into two containers and were separately flown to the home. Once they arrived, each packed goodies lowered to the ground and retrieved by the homeowners.
The autonomous drone navigates using the vehicle’s GPS system. The company was able to select first a store from which to deliver and then they surveyed customers within a one-mile radius to see if they would be wiling to take part into the pilot program.
Flirtey was the first company to make a delivery of medical supplies in Virginia in 2015 that flew water and emergency supplies to a home in Hawthorne, Nevada and completed the first shore-to-ship delivery a month ago. The recent delivery in partnership with 7-Eleven store chain appears to be the first time a customer placed an order and had it delivered.
7-Eleven noted that they plan to continue working with the drone company but didn’t arranged some sort of autonomous deliveries in a wider region.
